The location of Český Krumlov on the banks of the Vltava river, in the ante-mountains of Šumava, its picturesque and romantic landscape with many historic monuments give the visitors of our town many opportunities how to spend their free time. For example, visitors can make short hiking trips into the sights nearby such as the Cross Mountain above the town, or to the Cistercian Monastery in Zlatá Koruna, to the romantic ruins of the Dívčí Kámen Catle above the Vltava river, to the Celtic settlement Třísov beneath the Castle, to the medieval village of Rožmberk with a Castle on the rock or to the town of Vyšší Brod with a large Gothic monastery housing a unique library. On the way there, you can view an interesting rock formation called The Devils’s Wall.
Visitors with a preference for the wonders of nature can climb the Kleť mountain, rising above the town and giving magnificient views into the South Bohemian landscape. You can also visit the Lipno water dam located in the middle of charming woody hills of Šumava. Here you can swim, practice various water sports, go fishing or mushroom picking. A more strenuous trip is the one across the Šumava forest on the Třístoličník mountain or Plechý mountain from where you can view the mysterious Plešné lake with a monument to the writer Stifterovým high above the water level or a trip accros the historic Schwarzenberg waterwayu or on the Bear Trail.
